New Restaurants on Novi Road in 2026: Openings and Changes

If you've driven past 21420 Novi Road lately and wondered why the Border Cantina sign is still dark, you're not missing something. The rest of the internet hasn't caught up either.

According to What Now Detroit, Border Cantina ran on that stretch of Novi Road for 32 years before its owners retired and closed the doors. For a restaurant that outlasted most of its neighbors, that's not a quiet exit, it's a landmark disappearing. And what happens next on that same road tells a stranger story than a single closing usually does. While one end of Novi Road lost a three-decade institution, the north end saw new restaurant activity in 2026, including one Raising Cane's opening and plans for a second location.

Border Cantina's Closure

Border Cantina sat between 8 and 9 Mile on Novi Road, near the Northville border, close enough to Jet's Pizza and Brava Empanadas that regulars treated the block as a mini food row. When the Tex-Mex spot closed after 32 years in business, Glenn Kaplan and Mike Richardson, the co-owners behind Benstein Grille in Charter Township, moved in to acquire the space. Kaplan said the new concept would carry a similar vibe and menu to Benstein Grille itself: steaks, fish, pasta, salads, and appetizers, with a bar list built around bourbon, tequila, and wine. The working name was Northgrille Bar, though Kaplan flagged that it might not stick. The target opening window was January or February of 2026.

That target has come and gone. As of the most recent check, Border Cantina's own listing on Yelp still shows the location as closed, with no successor page live to replace it. Grubhub's delivery listing tells the same story. Nine months after the announcement, the search results for that address haven't been updated to match whatever is actually happening behind the windows. If you've tried to look up what's there now and come away confused, that confusion is accurate. The transition is real, but it's still in progress.

New Restaurants Near Grand River Avenue

A few miles north, near Grand River Avenue and across from Novi Town Center, Novi Road has been doing the opposite of going quiet. Raising Cane's opened its first Novi location at 26245 Novi Road on August 3, 2026, making it the third Raising Cane's in metro Detroit after locations in Canton. Early reviewers weren't shy about the reception. One Tripadvisor visitor summed up the opening weeks this way:

"you know it's a hit when there is a 20 car lineup through the drivethru"

That's not the end of the chicken finger story on this road. A separate project, reported just weeks ago, got city approval to remodel the former Wendy's building on Novi Road near Grand River Avenue into a second Raising Cane's, with an expected opening sometime in 2026 or early 2027, according to The Metro Detroit News. That means Novi is on track to have two separate Raising Cane's locations on the same road, roughly overlapping in construction and opening timelines, something that rarely happens even in corridors built for chain density.

The same stretch has been filling in around the edges too. The Peach Cobbler Factory opened a location at 26127 Novi Road in early 2026, run by franchisee Chacona Turner and joining existing Michigan locations in Detroit and Canton, with an Ann Arbor store already planned, per the company's own announcement. That address sits close enough to the new Cane's that both openings landed within the same calendar year on the same short list of national brands making a move in Novi at once.

Two Stretches, One Road

Put the two ends of Novi Road side by side and the picture is more specific than "restaurants come and go." One end lost an independent, single-location restaurant that had been run by the same owners for three decades. The other end saw a Raising Cane's location open, a second location planned, and a dessert franchise arrive. The result is a different mix of restaurant activity at each end of Novi Road.

Border Cantina's closing matters to people who ate there for thirty years, and the new arrivals at the north end add dining options. If you're trying to picture Novi Road in a year, the road may have two Raising Cane's locations on it and a new restaurant in the former Border Cantina space, though its name, as of this writing, still isn't finalized.

The Kaplan and Richardson project remains the one to watch on the south end. If a menu and grand opening date go public, it will answer the question everyone driving past 21420 Novi Road keeps asking. Until then, the former Border Cantina space is awaiting its next restaurant; a few miles north, one Raising Cane's is open and a second location is planned.
