The skeletons are back downtown from October 1 through 31, and the DDA bills this year's launch party as the 15th annual. This year the city around them is different. Since last October, Main Street has been rebuilt at the clock tower and a 10-acre riverfront park has opened on the former Northville Downs site. The DDA now describes Town Square and The Downs as two downtown districts.
The October calendar still runs almost entirely through the older district. A full Northville October now covers both, and the route between them is the one piece not yet built.
The Clock Tower Corner Sits Almost Level With Town Square Now
Barricades on Main Street between Center and Hutton came down June 22, after more than two months of construction that began in April. The work replaced worn pavers on a corridor that was nearly 20 years old and laid a new concrete base underneath. It also rebuilt the crumbling traffic island around the clock tower.
The change that matters most for October is a raised "tabletop" crossing at the clock tower. It brings that stretch of Main Street nearly level with Town Square. DDA Director Kate Knight described the drive over it as "a really comfortable but conscious easing up onto that traffic table and back down." That corner is where the month's biggest crowds gather. Witches' (and Warlocks) Night Out is staged at Main and Center.
Two Town Square items were still open when the street reopened. New lighting was expected sometime over the summer. A new fountain was pushed to later in 2026 after two bids came in well over expectations, and the existing fountain stayed in place in the meantime. No public update since June says whether either has been done. The City Council's June priorities list says the old fountain was temporarily repaired while it waits for reconstruction. The DDA's calendar still lists its October events as scheduled.
The Main Street rebuild cost about $1 million, a third of a $3 million DDA improvement plan. The rest of that plan points downhill.
The Second District Opened in June
Downs River Park opened Wednesday, June 17. It was the first finished public amenity on the 49-acre redevelopment that started when Northville Downs closed in 2024. The park has 2.5 miles of walking and biking trails, pedestrian bridges, native landscaping and more than 1,400 new trees. There are public art installations through the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the historic Mary Gilbert Log Cabin was moved onto the site.
The center of the park is a stretch of the Rouge River that ran underground in a culvert from the 1960s until it was opened back up in 2025. Mayor Brian Turnbull said at the opening that Friends of the Rouge had visited that week and "found nine different species of fish now flourishing" in the river. His advice to visitors fits an October afternoon well:
"Slow down today. Slow down. Enjoy it. Notice the attention to detail."
The city's August 18 newsletter says the park's paths connect to the Hines Drive pathway and calls the park the first of five Riverwalk sections. So a fall walk or ride can start at the river and keep going along Hines.
Some things are not ready yet. The log cabin is expected to become a welcome center eventually. As of June, the city reported its exterior work as substantially complete, with window and door repairs still to come. The timeline for the Downs' Central Park depends on which source you read. In June, Hometownlife reported it was still under construction and expected to open the next year. The city's August 18 newsletter says Central Park "will be completed in late fall," but doesn't give a year. None of the city, DDA or Friends of the Rouge calendars lists an October or November event at the park. For now it is a place to walk on your own schedule between the dated events uptown.
The Hill Between Them Gets Rebuilt in 2027
The next phase of the DDA plan explains why the two districts can feel farther apart than they are. Starting in 2027, the DDA plans a stair-and-walkway project on Cady Street, which the DDA calls the main ADA-accessible link between Town Square and The Downs. The goal is a clearer path across a steep grade change and filling gaps in the regional trail system. The project is budgeted at about $1 million, with $686,050 coming from a SEMCOG Transportation Alternatives Program grant.
This October, you still get between the skeletons on Main and the river at the Downs by using the Cady Street connection as it is today. Cady has its own change too. The DDA's September newsletter advertised a store-closing sale at REVIR, 345 E. Cady St. The boutique is closing its Northville store and continuing the brand online. The newsletter gave no final in-store date.
The October and November Dates
Most of the calendar stays uptown. The one new event is at Mill Race Village, on Griswold.
| Date | Event | Where | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct. 1–31 | Skeletons Are Alive displays | Downtown Northville | All month |
| Fri., Oct. 2 | 15th annual Skeletons Are Alive Launch Party | Downtown Northville | 5–10 p.m. |
| Thu., Oct. 15 | Witches' (and Warlocks) Night Out | Main and Center streets | Starts 4 p.m. |
| Sat., Oct. 17 | Fall Lantern Festival, first year | Mill Race Village, 215 Griswold St. | See note below |
| Thu., Oct. 22 | "Alive in Spirit" Día de los Muertos | Northville Community Center, 303 W. Main St. | 5:30–8 p.m. |

Two listings disagree, so check before you go. For Witches' Night Out, the DDA's event page gives 4 to 9 p.m., while the City of Northville calendar runs it until 10:30 p.m. The DDA promises a costume contest, late shopping, music and street performers.
The Fall Lantern Festival has the bigger gap. Mill Race Village's event page lists it from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The DDA's October overview lists 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The difference matters. Mill Race describes a daytime program of pumpkin carving, Victorian-era crafts and demonstrations, live music, artisan makers and seasonal treats. After dark, the village is lit by hundreds of carved pumpkins and costumed storytellers tell ghost stories. Mill Race's page currently says registration is closed, and its tickets are non-refundable. If you haven't bought tickets, contact Mill Race Village directly before planning the evening around it.
The Northville Community Center hosts both the Día de los Muertos night and the holiday market. Northville Parks & Recreation says the center is open while renovations near completion. Parks & Rec has also changed addresses. Its renovated headquarters opened July 16 at 16225 Beck Road, which freed up the former Hillside office space for recreation programs.
Two Smaller Changes for Weekend Plans
Ford Field Park has a new playground, which opened after a June 12 ribbon cutting. Families heading to Streets of Treats on the morning of October 24 have a new option nearby.
Mountain bikers should plan around Maybury State Park, 49601 Eight Mile Road. Its mountain bike trail has been closed for renovation since May 1. The Michigan DNR expects the work to run through fall 2026, with the trail reopening before winter. Until then, the Downs River Park paths and the Hines Drive connection are the closest new place to ride.
If the changes at Main Street and the Downs have you curious about the homes along that walk, Andrea Yakobe can go over what's selling near downtown Northville and the river with you. Schedule a quick market consultation, or book a showing for a weekend when you're already in town for the skeletons.
